While a nighttime routine is often portrayed as a peaceful and serene ritual, it is important to acknowledge that life doesn’t always unfold according to plan. In reality, our nighttime routines can sometimes be interrupted to deviate from the idealised version we envision. Unexpected events, responsibilities, or personal circumstances can disrupt our routines, leading to a sense of frustration or guilt. However, it is essential to remember that flexibility and self-compassion are key in navigating these exceptions to our nighttime routines.

By accepting and adapting to the challenges that arise, we can still prioritise self-care and find moments of relaxation amidst the chaos. So, let’s explore some common exceptions and ways to navigate them while still nurturing ourselves before bedtime.
Exceptions
- Calm & Relaxing Atmosphere
We envision our nighttime routine to be a peaceful and serene experience. We imagine dimmed lights, soft music playing in the background, and a cosy ambiance that allows us to unwind from the day’s stress. - Pampering Skincare Routine
Our exception is to follow an elaborate skincare routine, complete with multiple steps and luxurious products. We imagine indulging in face masks serums, and creams. Taking our time to pamper our skin and achieve that flawless complexion. - Reading a book
Many of us aspire to wind down by curling up with a good book. We imagine getting last in the pages, immersing ourselves in captivating stories, or expanding our knowledge with insightful non-fiction. - Disconnecting from Technology
We hope to disconnect from the digital world during our night-time routine. We plan to set our phones aside avoiding social media and emails, and instead focus on more offline activities that promote relaxation and mental well-being.
Reality
- Multitasking Chaos
Despite our intentions, our nighttime routine often becomes a whirlwind of multitasking. We find ourselves simultaneously trying to prepare dinner, respond to messages, and finish pending tasks. The calm and relaxing atmosphere we envisioned is replaced by a flurry of activities. - Skincare Simplified
The elaborate skincare routine we envisioned sometimes falls victim to our exhaustion. On some nights, we opt for a quick cleanse and a basic moisturiser, abandoning the idea of an extensive regimen. The reality is that our energy levels may not always align with our skincare aspirations. - Scrolling through Screens
Instead of reading a book, we often find ourselves mindlessly scrolling through our phones or binge-watching our favourite TV shows. The allure of technology often proves difficult to resist, even when we intended to disconnect. - Late-Night Snacks
Reality often involves succumbing to late-night cravings and indulging in snacks that may not align with our health goals. We find ourselves raiding the fridge or ordering takeout, seeking comfort in food instead of focusing on healthier alternatives.
While our nighttime expectations may paint a picture of tranquility and self-care, reality often present a more chaotic and unpredictable scenario. Balancing work, responsibilities, and personal needs can make it challenging to achieve the ideal nighttime routine consistently.
However, it’s important to remember that self-compassion is key. Embracing the imperfections of our nighttime routine and finding moments of relaxation and self-care, no matter how small can still contribute to overall well-being. Flexibility and adapting our routine to suit our current circumstances are essential in finding a balance that works for us.
